04.03.1963–This Day in Alaskan History

Tyonek, Alaska

1963–After months of active exploration and seismic research of Tyonek reservation lands, the Interior Department puts the 25,000 acres of the reservation land up for oil leasing. The sale became a target for lawsuits filed by the Tyoneks and some oil companies, and is stopped at 1:58 p.m., two minutes before the official start of 2 p.m. The Tyoneks successfully argue that they own the oil lands and are entitled to bonus bids.
